Greetings Cards-Test Prints
I printed out the colours and designs
that I liked and that worked the best to
see how the dimensions worked.
Some need to be scaled up or down
but only slightly, I am then going
to go down to print and get them
printed onto mount board as that is
one of the materials I am going to try
making the cards from.
Greetings Cards-Colour Test Prints
I printed off my designs in the different colours and variations I had
been playing around with on illustrator.
Once I had printed it was clearer which ones worked better than others,
I also asked some of my peers which colours they thought worked
well with which designs.
I am now going to print out the chosen designs to actual size to see
how they scale up and see if any changes need to be made.
Natalie Hughes
Natalie Hughes is a freelance illustrator, she designs greetings cards
and children's illustrations.
She focuses a lot on pattern design and animals which are both things
I am looking at in my own design work during my FMP project.
A lot of her work is character based, a lot of time giving human
features to inanimate objects, which is something that comes
up a lot in design for children.
Alien Illustrations
I didn't like the alien drawings I had
done so I did some more versions,
I decided to go with this one, I tried
to keep it to a similar style as the dinosaur
drawing I had also done to keep some
consistency.

Lydia Shirreff
I came across Lydia Kasumi Shirreff, he work looks at paper craft
and construction within design.
She enjoying making which is something I love to do and still try and
incorporate into my work, even if it is just in the early stages of
designing.
I want to look at paper craft more during my FMP and how something
becomes 3D and interactive, I want to take this idea on in my designs
for children.

Greetings Cards-Design 4, Dinosaur
I wasn't liking how the aliens were turning out so I left them for
a while and moved onto dinosaurs, this card will be a bit different
and will open up all the way so the dinosaur illustration will need to be printed
on the inside and outside of the material used for the main part of the body.
I have done three different illustrations, I don't know which one to use yet
but I do find these guys quite endearing!
Honeycomb Fold Test
I quickly tested out what the honeycomb
fold would look like as the fairies skirt
and it looks like it is going to work well.
I have the lazer cutter booked on Thursday
as well as the vinyl printer so I should
have a functioning mock up by the end
of the week if all goes to plan.
Honeycomb Paper has Arrived!
I ordered some already made up honeycomb
paper balls after attempting to make them myself.
I have just ordered a few to see if they work
with my design idea, they are a perfect size,
so hopefully it should all come together.
I have also ordered some of the honeycomb paper in a sheet.
I am hoping this means I will
be able to cut my own shapes from it for
some of my designs but I am not too sure if
this is going to work yet...
Crit Feedback
This is the feedback from the group
discussion we had in our design context
crit with Fred.
It was a really useful crit and has really
made me think about what I am looking at
within my research and the kind of things I
want to explore to make my final outcome
interesting and challenge already existing
ideas about design.
Design Context Crit
We have a design context crit this afternoon, looking at the research we
have done so far in relation to our briefs and how we have begun to organise it.
I have made these design boards with images covering the different areas I
am looking at across my briefs. I also have some books to take in which also
highlight the type of work I am looking at.
I will post feedback up here after the crit.

Just Draw Luke Packs
We got the Just Draw Luke name and Twitter hash tag printed onto
clear vinyl and stuck them onto plain white rubbers to go with
the pencils inside the Just Draw Luke mail out packs.
These are the mail out tubes we are sending out to studios, the each contain a Just Draw Luke
pencil and rubber, as well as the photo of luke and paper to draw him on.
It will also include a stamp addressed envelope so it will be easy for people
to send their drawings back to us.
There is also the Just Draw Luke logo of the pencil stuck on the outside and there will
also be an address label.
Just Draw Luke Mail Outs
Niall designed the mail outs that we are going to send out to design
studios for the Just Draw Luke project.
One side is the picture of Luke that we want people to draw and
the other sheet is a box that people can use to draw their
picture of Luke and send back to us!
Cup Cake Design Development
I started to look at colour with the cupcake design, after playing around with different
colours for a while I decided to use the same colour palette as the fairies to keep
consistency.
I have also decided that the tops will be the bit that is made from honeycomb so
I have mocked up what the bases would be like before the honeycomb fold
is attached, I am going to test out printing on mount board and on vinyl that
will be stuck on wood.
Greetings Cards- Design 2, Cupcake
The second greetings card design for girls
is going to be a cupcake, I am yet to decide which
bit will open up with the honeycomb fold, it will
either be the cupcake case or the top part with
the icing on. I am leaning more towards the base
but I am going to do some more design development
and see what works out better.
I am going to put these illustrations into Illustrator
to play around with layout and colour.
Fairy Illustrations
I drew some basic outlines for the fairy card, I didn't
want to make it too complicated because when the
cards are cut out I want them to be stable and free
standing so I needed a solid shape to work with.
I then took them into Illustrator and started adding
colour to the designs.
I have worked with mainly different pastel colours, for fairies this seemed
to be the best colour palate, I am now going to look at how I am going to print
them. I am going to try printing onto card and also onto vinyl that would be
stuck onto wood.
Greetings Cards- Design 1, Fairy
The first design that I have developed for a girls
greeting card is a fairy, looking at the skirt opening up
into the honeycomb fold.
I found an old fairy activity book at home which I
have used as a basis for my illustrations.

I have started to draw possible outlines
for the fairies wings and body, I am then going to take some of these forward
to build up the image of a fairy which
I will then digitally mock up and
play around with colour and
then move onto print processes.
This is a basic plan of how the card will be made
up and possible ways it will be printed and
assembled.

Fish Tank Submission
This is my final mocked up version of my illustration for the Fish Tank
brief set by Music, they wanted to see the design mocked up in the
space to get an idea of how it will look.
This is e-mail I sent supporting my entry,
Hi Music,
This is my entry for the Fish Tank, my entry is based on the song Applesauce by Animal Collective,
Unfortunately I don't have an MP3 to send but you can listen to the song on YouTube here
The song is upbeat and always puts me in the best mood when I listen to it, its lyrics
just praise the wonders of fruit and the abundance of fruit, and just generally how go it is.
So having all this brightly coloured fruit around the studio will hopefully cheer people up like
the song and maybe promote some healthy eating as well!
I propose that the illustrations will be printed on vinyl and stuck onto the glass in
the style shown on the visualisations of the space I have attached.
And it has been said that an apple a day keeps the doctor away!
Thank You,
Francesca Pecqueur
The deadline is Feb the 22nd, so I will see what happens!

Making A Honeycomb Fold
I attempted to make my own honeycomb fold out shape, I managed
to make one but it doesn't look the best, I think if I took my time over it
I could create a much better one. however it is rather time consuming
so if I was to go forward with this design idea I think I would
order already made ones to use with my designs.
Paper Folding-Open Out Shapes
After developing possible idead for my greetings cards I want to
work with the idea of the card opening up to create a shape or character,
I like these honeycomb shapes make from crepe paper, I am looking
into making them myself or possibly ordering them if they come
in the sizes I would want.
I am now going to try make some of these myself and also
start designing posibilites of how I could use these in designs.
Greetings Cards-Idea Devlopment
I have brainstormed possible outcomes
for the greetings card brief, looking at
different folds, pop ups and interactive
designs.
I have also looked over possible different
themes that I could explore in my designs,
looking at gender specific ideas and also
unisex ideas.

20 Birthday Cards to Colour
Usborne Children's Books have made of a book of birthday
cards for children to colour in and give to people, this is a possible
market to look at, instead of making cards to give to children look at the
cards that children could make to give to other people. Also the idea
that you could give a child one of these for their birthday and could come
with colour pencils and the could colour them in themselves, maybe
with stickers as well.
Growing Graphics
Growing Graphics is a book which looks at graphic design within
children's products, it covers products from a range of ages, I have manly
focused on the design for the younger children as that is the age range I
will be focusing on in my design for children briefs.
I have looked at different packaging design which will be useful for
my Ellas Kitchen brief, also looking at book design and A-Z products
which will be useful for the Penguin brief as well as my own
A-Z book.
Structural Greetings
Structural Greetings is a book which looks at different ways people have
communicated in a interactive way, there is a range of formats, including
pop ups, fold outs, self-constructions and cards that turn into something else,
something useful or something that holds something else.
There is also a CD with all the nets to make the cards yourself, I could possibly
use these as a basis for some of my own designs.

Patch Pops
These Patchpop cards by Santoro are really great! They come on
one sheet and no scissors or glue is needed to make they, they all just
pop out and slot together. They come with an envelope and a place to
write a message and the receiver builds the card themselves. It is interactive
and becomes something that will be kept. All of the different designs
also have different patterns printed onto them which adds an extra feature
to the designs. I definitely want to get some of these for myself!

Paperchase Greetings Cards
Paperchase have a range of greetings cards, I have focused on their more
interactive cards, ones which pop up, open out or are 3D. My favourite cards
they do are the animals ones which open up to form the body, made out of
crepe paper, something like that would be something I would like to design
YCN- Greetings Cards
I want to start on my YCN brief as that has a set deadline in March
for entries. I am doing the Greetings UK brief, to link it to the other
briefs that I am doing I am looking at cards designed for children and
how they can be made interactive. This is just an initial brainstorm of
the areas I want to explore in this brief.
Applesauce-Fruit Illustrations
I put all in illustrations into illustrator and started to add colour, I played around with
different colours and gradients on each of the fruit to get different outcomes.
I then started to look at putting the fruit together, how it would be if it was put
on the fish tank.
I looked at having the honey running through the fruit but I didn't
like where that was going or what it looked like and I thought
it would be too much on the fish tank and there would be no clear space
to see through anymore. I then just looked at the fruit all together,
I am proposing that it would be printed on vinyl stickers and stuck onto
the glass, I am going to print it onto acetate to get the kind of effect that
would produce.
Applesauce-Initial Illustrations
I listened to Applesauce and looked at the lyrics and picked out all the
different fruits that were mentioned and key part of the song that I could
draw on for inspiration for the Fish Tank brief.
I am going to focus on the idea of an abundance of fruit, looking
at the lyric 'I thought fruit was an infinite thing.'
I am going to put my drawings into illustrator and look at adding
colour and how I could lay them out.
