Book Mock Up

Letters

I decided to go with the graphite drawn letters as they
gave a smilar effect to the potato prints but took less time,
I have done a few variations of each one and also coloured
them in colours in relation to the animal they are
associated with, I am gonna do a rough mock
up of the animals and letters and then write up all
the animals names.

Products in Context

I managed to get my Wind in the Willows range photographed in
context, the very nice people at Emmaus second hand shop let
me borrow part of their store for a while to photograph my work.
I set up a scene to look like a child's bedroom and placed my
products in it, seeing as it was in a shop the photos came
out really well and it looked like it was shot in an actual
bedroom, I am pleased I managed to get my products shot
in context as it gives them more meaning and shows how they
would work in the real world.

Photoshopped Letters

These are the potato prints coloured on Photoshop, I
like the effect they give however it is quite a time
consuming process but definitely something to
consider.

These are all the hand drawn letter coloured on Photoshop,
I like quite a lot of the styles I have done, but I think the
ones I like the best are the one that are done in the
graphite stick, they give the same kind of effect as the potato
prints, I think due to time constraints I am going to go with
that idea, trying the letter filled in like the Bb.

Potato Printing

I had the idea to try my letter with potato printing
to get that child like style I am trying to achieve.
I tried out A and B, these are the prints I got and I
am now gonna scan them into Photoshop and
see how they look.

Letter for A-Z Book

I have started to look at the
type I am going to use in my A-Z book,
I need to gave the letter, upper and lower
case on each page as well as the animals
names. I know I want the type to all
be hand drawn but I am unsure of the
style. I have started to play around with ideas,
I am gonna scan these into Photoshop
and see which work best before I carry on with the rest of the alphabet.

A-Z Book Range Ideas

Book Layout Ideas

Coloured Animals

I have coloured all my animals on Photoshop, I have done
a few test prints and adjustments to the colours, I have also
started to think about what print processes and different
textures and stocks I want to use on each of the animals.
I am also going to look at format and layout now as well
as the text that will go with the animals.

Animal Colour Adjustments

I test printed my animals to see about the
colours, obviously the stock I am going to
eventually print on will be different but I
wanted to get an idea of what they will look
like. Some of the colours didn't work as well
as I thought so I went back and adjusted them.

Book Covers

I got my final book designs finalised so now the decision
was about what stock to use...

(insert digital images)

I had ordered some different GF Smith embossed papers
and tried the design on each,

The papers were Buckram, silk weave
and leather, the leather one didn't
work at all, it didn't suit the print at
all but maybe useful for one of my
other briefs.
The silk weave looked good but the
buckram was definitely the best one
so I went forward with that stock.

This is the design for the paper back version of the book,
it has the illustration in the background then the text
on top which is also spot varnished to stand out more
over the background.

The hardback books have the same design for the underneath
layer but then also has a covering dust jacket printed onto
blue tracing paper, both have the text printed on but the
tracing paper layer has been spot varnished.

Overall I am happy with how
the books have come out, I do
want to develop them further
but I am very aware of time
and I now need to focus on
my other briefs.

A-Z Animal Illustrations

I chose the subject of animals for mu children's A-Z book as I thought
the subject matter would lend itself well to the different print processes
I want to explore throughout this book.
I am going to take these illustrations and colour them on Photoshop
and think about what processes I am going to use for each one and
how I will need to set up each file for the appropriate method.
I also need to think about layout and format.

Plate and Bowl

I bought some decal paper to transfer
my designs on to kitchenware, I had tried
decal before and it had failed miserably!
However this time was a sucess! I am really
happy with the outcome of the plate and bowl,
I might do a few more items but I need to concentrate
more on my other briefs now.

Crit

We had our first crit in a long time last week, I set all my
work out that I had been doing over the last few weeks and I
was really pleased with the amount of work and progress I had
made on the briefs. It encouraged me to carry on working
at this pace to get the most out of each brief as I can.

This is my feedback sheet I got for my work
during the crit, Sophie and Sam critted my work
and they gave really useful and helpful feedback
and gave me direction for where I need to
go from here. From this feedback I did my own self
evaluation of my work and what I need to do next.

Within my self evaluation of my work
I assessed my strengths and weaknesses
within my work so far during the FMP process,
I was glad to hear that there is a clear personality
within my work as finding my own style and direction
was something I have struggled with for a while.
I have done a lot of experimentation within my
work and a clear skill set can be seen within the
production of my work, I am happy that my
production has improved as the final product
was something I always struggled with during a
brief and I feel like now I have reached a point where
I can produce a high standard of production.
My weaknesses lie in the speed of my working, I
have concentrated a lot on some briefs and not so
much on others, I need to pick up the pace and get
my work up to the standard I want across all my briefs,
I think by setting myself strick deadlines I will be
able to achieve this. In the next week I need to complete my greetings cards brief
and my Wind in the Willows brief as I have booked out photography so I can photograph
my work and get my boards done.

Book Designs-Mock Ups

I have printed out some of my initial book cover designs, I have tried them on a
few different stocks and tried out layering, I also want to look into spot varnishing the
text but I think the type itself needs some work before I do that, I am going to take these
designs to my crit tomorrow and see what people think. I also still need to add the authors name on and tweak the blurb type.

Initial Book Designs

Baby Grows

I have designed and printed onto baby grows
to save time I used heat transfers instead of screen
printing, in an ideal world I would like to screen
print them all but I am worried about time for
my other briefs.
They would come together in the pack of
three, I am also going to apply these designs
to children's t-shirts.

GFSmith Stock

The paper samples I ordered for the book covers for the
Wind in the Willows briefs arrived, I am happy with
the choices I made I just ned to text out the print on the stocks
and see which works best.
